Your Most Frequently Asked Micro-needling Questions Answered

Your most frequently asked microneedling questions answered

When it comes to making long-term improvements to the skin, many think that they need to turn to ultra-invasive procedures or even cosmetic surgery to see results but sometimes the most transformative results come from small packages.

The result seen from microneedling, also known as skin needling or collagen induction therapy, are proof that you don’t always need to go under the knife or through weeks of downtime to see incredible skin results.

One of our most popular treatments, today we thought we’d answer some of your most frequently asked questions about microneedling so that you too can experience these amazing results for yourself.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling is non-surgical skin treatment that works by harnessing a handheld technology, for us the SkinPen, that features a sterile tip containing a series of needles. These needles are responsible for creating microwounds in the skin, that are incredibly small and controlled. This notion triggers your body’s natural wound healing response which is the key to exceptional clinical outcomes.

This wound healing response is essentially your body thinking it has experienced injury and as a result, goes into battle to repair and strengthen. It does this by accelerating the production of collagen and elastin in the affected area which we know are the magic words responsible for younger, stronger, and smoother looking skin. It’s no wonder that microneedling frequently tops the non-surgical skin treatment list!

With every microneedling treatment, this response is triggered, more collagen and elastin fibres are produced, and the skin concerns we’re treating start to considerably improve. Unlike more invasive approaches to skin transformations, microneedling treatments are quick, comfortable and have minimal associated downtime. Some redness and tingling sensation may be felt following your microneedling treatment, but this will subside within 48 hours.

What can microneedling do for my skin?

This is where things get super exciting! Microneedling isn’t a one-trick pony but in fact, is known to achieve exceptional results for an abundance of skin concerns on the face, neck, décolleté, hands and body.

Here’s some of the most popular skin concerns treated with microneedling:

  • Overall skin rejuvenation for a skin pick-me-up
  • Improving the appearance of pigmentation and skin discolouration, particularly melasma which can be worsened by heat-induced treatments
  • Treating the signs of ageing, particularly fine lines, and wrinkles
  • Addressing congestion and enlarged pores
  • Minimising the appearance of scarring such as acne scarring and surgical scars
  • Improving the appearance of uneven skin tone and texture
  • Addressing unwanted stretch marks on the body
  • Improving skin laxity and skin tightening

Because microneedling doesn’t involve heat-based treatment, it is suitable for a broader range of skin types and Fitzpatrick shades. A customisable treatment, microneedling can be adjusted to treat at varying depths to tackle more difficult to treat skin concerns or alternatively, more superficial ones with minimal downtime.

What technology do you use?

At +Aesthetics, we use the SkinPen microneedling device thanks to its safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction. It is built on the principles of being a medical device for medical practitioners and its development was focused on proven science. We prioritise servicing our patients with the most advanced and reputable products and technologies on the market so when it came to selecting our microneedling technology, this was no different.

In Australia, we have very strict rules on the use of skin needling devices which is controlled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, otherwise known as the TGA SkinPen is one of the few fully TGA-approved devices available to Australian clinics which one of the leading reasons why we chose this device. In America, SkinPen is the only device that is FDA-approved for aesthetic treatments. It’s safe to say it gets the tick of approval from the big guys!

When the SkinPen team developed this technology, a lot of consideration was taken into the safety and cleanliness of treatments with the device, and we really appreciate their efforts. The device features a lock-in system for the microneedling tip which means once the treatment has concluded that tip cannot be reconnected to the device. This gives you total peace of mind that your microneedling treatment is of the highest hygiene levels.

Treatments with the SkinPen are notably faster and more precise than other technologies which for you means more comfortable treatments and less downtime required post-treatment.

Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?

Absolutely! During your initial skin consultation, your practitioner may recommend a series of microneedling treatments in conjunction with other +Aesthetics treatments.

Generally, you can expect to require 3-6 treatments, spaced four weeks apart to achieve optimal results. This will vary based on how many areas of concern we are treating and their severity. In between these monthly treatments, you may be recommended in-clinic treatments such as LED light therapy to support your specific skin goals and medical grade skincare to ensure your results are continuing at home.
